House of Terrain Nine: Where Dark, Moody Palette Create A Sense of Depth and Unity

Tucked within a Victorian terrace in South Melbourne, House of Terrain Nine is the new workplace of Terrain Nine Design Studio. The arrival sequence sets the tone immediately. A matte black Victorian door punctuates a refreshed façade, signalling a deliberate contrast between heritage and contemporary expression.

At the core of Terrain Nine’s practice is the belief that function and aesthetics are inseparable. The studio’s name draws from Indian cosmology, specifically the Navagraha, the nine celestial bodies revered in Indian culture. These include the Sun, Moon, and seven planetary forces, each understood as shaping cycles, balance, and movement in life.

For Terrain Nine, this idea translates into a foundational design approach, one where spaces are conceived as interconnected systems. Function and aesthetics are treated as equal. The office becomes a physical expression of this philosophy: calm, cohesive, and quietly confident.

As studio director Sneha notes, the workplace is intended to be “a unique, atmospheric space that showcases our ability to craft distinctive, tailored environments where form follows function.”

The existing terrace layout consists of four interconnected rooms, an arrangement that naturally supports the studio’s workflow. The plan allows for a smooth spatial progression, guiding clients from meeting spaces into collaborative design zones.

The Victorian building is generous with daylight, yet the interiors required a complete reimagining. Terrain Nine responded with a dark, largely monochromatic palette. Layers of grey dominate walls and joinery, offset by white accents in furniture, lighting, and curated objects. Heritage elements, arches and ceiling roses, are preserved and allowed to quietly punctuate the space.

“In designing the space, we aimed to strike a balance between a dark, moody atmosphere and the warm, natural light streaming in through the large windows, all while respecting the building's Victorian heritage. This was achieved by preserving the existing architectural elements and incorporating complementary Victorian features into the interior.”

Contemporary minimalism that remains respectful of Victorian character. It is a signature Terrain Nine approach, soft minimalism layered with modern touchpoints, classic lines, and a sense of warmth that emerges through proportion.

“A moody interior that still feels inviting.”
